Industry Consolidation

Recently GIWA participated in state based grain industry discussions regarding industry good functions with grower organisations in Western Australia. We are very pleased to communicate the following joint WA Grain Industry Statement August 2020 in support of attracting Grains Australia to be headquartered in Western Australia, co-located in fit-for-purpose facilities with the Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre.

Since GIWA’s formation in 2008 (in response to deregulation), as a whole of supply chain industry association supporting an efficient and effective WA export grain value chain, GIWA members have been supportive of consolidation of national “industry good” functions. We define industry good functions as standards, trade and market access, varietal classification and rationalisation, market insight and education, and foundation research and development supporting market insight and education.

GIWA has contributed over the past 2 years to national industry good consolidation discussions, and earlier this year welcomed the formation of a new national organisation Grains Australia, which will shortly commence the consolidation of national grain classification and trade and market access functions. At this point the Grains Research and Development Corporation is the sole member of Grains Australia. GIWA collaborates with national partners Grain Trade Australia, Barley Australia, Pulse Australia, the Australian Oilseeds Federation, Wheat Quality Australia, the Grain Industry Market Access Forum, is a service provider to GRDC, DPIRD and CBH, and as our members are aware, we are fortunate to enjoy a close working relationship with the national Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre, whose technical staff bring back valuable market insights into the Australian grain export supply chain.

GIWA will provide a further update on industry consolidation to our members at the GIWA AGM on Wednesday 7th October.
