GIWA Pulse Council

The purpose of the GIWA Pulse Council is to represent the WA Pulse industry. Areas of focus include:

  • Support for Pulse Australia and the setting of pulse standards
  • Pre-competitive market development for lupins as food
  • Research and capacity building for treatment of alkaloids in Lupins
  • Support for pulse extension (lupins, chickpeas, red lentils, field peas, faba beans) & disease management in WA

Lupins as food allergen mandatory

On 25th May 2017, Lupins have been confirmed for mandatory allergen labelling by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ). GIWA supports this mandatory labelling, as part of the growth for the high value specialty health food market segment for lupins as food. Industry has 12 months to 26th May 2018 to comply with labelling requirements.

'PASE' Lupins as Food Project

With funding from the Commonwealth Department of Agriculture and Water Resources (DAWR), the Grain Industry Association of WA (GIWA) has launched the ‘PASE’ Lupins as Food Project.

The aim of the project is to support small lupin exporters in Western Australia (WA) to evolve their market entry strategy for the Middle East and is being managed by Dr Shyamala Vishnumohan, GIWA Pulse Consultant.

Proudly supported by members of the GIWA Pulse Council, Department of Agriculture and Food of WA (DAFWA), Australian Export and Innovation Centre (AEGIC), the Grains & Legumes Nutrition Council, Pulse Australia and the WA trade representatives in the Dubai and relevant trade offices.
