An important function of the GIWA Wheat Council is its leading role in managing the relationship between the noodle wheat supply chain and the Japanese and Korean markets to ensure the long-term sustainability of the noodle wheat industry in Western Australia. The Council provides growing season and harvest updates to Japan and Korea via a formal partnership involving Grains Australia and CBH, and twice per year formally meets with Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) and the Japan Flour Millers’ Association (JFMA), with the post-harvest meeting held in Perth and the mid-year meeting held in Tokyo.
The GIWA Wheat Council, in conjunction with CBH and cereal chemists from Grains Australia, review noodle wheat volumes and quality at the completion of every annual harvest and provide recommendations to MAFF & JFMA on the optimal noodle wheat blend ratio and protein parameters to provide Japan with consistent supply for the next shipping year.
The GIWA Wheat Council is also currently working with CBH to review the wheat segregation system in WA to determine if that is delivering optimal value to both growers and traders.
