New GIWA Chair announced at 2023 AGM

Ms Walmsley, who steps into the Chair role from Deputy, replaces outgoing Chair Lyndon Mickel. Mr Mickel, a grower from Beaumont, voluntarily vacated the position to focus more on his farming enterprise. He will continue as GIWA Barley Council Deputy Chair, and will remain on the GIWA Board.

See updated Board and Commodity Council lists below.

Ms Walmsley has more than 20 years of agribusiness experience and prior to joining InterGrain, spent more than ten years with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (then Department of Agriculture and Food, WA) in a variety of roles. During this time, she played an industry leadership role in the development of the Australian grains industry ‘End Point Royalty’ collection system which has enabled cereal breeding in Australia to become commercially sustainable.

Ms Walmsley was appointed to CEO of InterGrain during 2012. InterGrain is a national cereal breeding business, where she has played an integral role in governance, developing operating systems and building the company’s commercial platform.

Ms Walmsley is also the Chair of Australian Crop Breeders, a member of Grains Australia Barley and Oat Councils, and Director of Chemistry Centre WA, and during 2020, was a finalist in the Telstra Business Women’s award and in 2015, the WA Rural Woman of the Year.

At the GIWA 2023 AGM, Peter Bostock was appointed to Deputy Chair of the Board.

Mr Bostock is the Sales and Technical Manager – Southern WA at Pioneer Seeds, as well as the Technical Lead for WA. He has a keen interest in farming systems, particularly soil health, crop nutrition and resistance management to support sustainable profitability.

The GIWA Board and Staff congratulate Ms Walmsley and Mr Bostock on their appointments, and thank Mr Mickel for his invaluable contribution to the WA grains industry.

In addition to changes at a Board level, there were some movements in the GIWA Commodity Councils. GIWA welcomes new Wheat Council Chair, Tracy Lefroy and Deputy Chair, Dion Bennett, and thanks outgoing Chair Peter Rees and Deputy Chair, Tress Walmsley, for their leadership. Alan Meldrum also returns to the Pulse Council as Deputy Chair.
